Bio: I earned a BFA in Illustration in 1999, then promptly went to work in the mainframe computer industry.  I discovered early on that it takes regular income to produce Art, therefore, I have my happy little nook at DST Systems. It involves troubleshooting mainframe computer devices, mucking about the systems, and occasionally working with end-users. It's technical, persnickity, and dynamic. It makes a good logic balance for the creative side of my mind.

The creative side of my mind is occupied with dragons and psychadelic color schemes, as it has been since early childhood. Witness the gallery.

My favored technique is to use a watercolor base with Prismacolor pencil overlays. Most of the work here was created like this. I also create art with my Zig ink pens, Prismacolor markers, and colored pencils. I also create some black and white ink works.

I show my work primarily at SF&F conventions in the Midwest, though I like to try to hit Dragon*Con every year.  I always visit Archon in St. Louis in early October.

I do commissioned work regularly.  If you are interested, please contact me privately. Here is my commission information.

I am not accepting requests (that is, freebies) any longer.

I have prints available for just about all of the colored work you see here. I make my prints with my Epson 2200, and I do my own matting.

I'm trying to keep the number of images here at Elfwood reasonable. I have some of my older works, as well as sketches and work-in-progress up at my Deviant Art Gallery. Please stop by to see what's new and under construction!

Interests
Let's see... Stuff I like: rocks, bugs, birds, dragons, monsters from outer space, giant robots, muscle-bound heroes, drawing, reading, technical writing, martial arts, walking really fast, and chocolate. Chocolate is always interesting.
Favorite Fantasy/Scifi Movies and TV Shows
I dig Transformers, both 1986 and 2007 versions, Aliens, Predator, Aliens vs Predator, Batman, and any of Miazaki's animated features. I like some Disney 'toons, and all kinds of other SF/Fantasy movies. Last Samurai was exquisite, and so was Equilibrium, Mirrormask, and Sunshine. I'm a fan of Babylon 5, Heroes, X-Files, Avatar, Card Captor, Tenchi, Blade, The Matrix, Harry Potter, Cowboy Bebop, X-Men... You get the idea.
Favorite Fantasy/Scifi Books
Harry Potter for the win! Also all things by Katherine Kerr, The Fallen series by Sniegoski, anything by Neil Gaiman and/or Dave McKean - especially the Sandman comics series, Transformers comics by Simon Furman and those guys from Dreamwave and IDW. Oh, oh! And Indiana Jones, Batman, and Star Wars comics, and all that old Aliens and Predator stuff! The Lucifer and the Fables comics series are also very good. I also like weird fiction from the 1920s and 30s - especially work by Clark Ashton Smith, HP Lovecraft, and Lin Carter. Brian Lumley's Titus Crow and dream cycl series are also fantastic.
Favorite Music
I like classical, classic rock, new age/spacey, opera, march, Europop, and the occasional hair band from the 80s.

Response for Angelique: Please contact me directly at wingsoflightning@yahoo.com. I have no way of contacting you except for Elfwood post, as you did not leave an email address for direct contact.

Thank you! I do have prints of Dragon and Fluffykins available - 8x10 for US$15, 11x14 for US$30, 16x20 for US$50, shipping inclusive. As for original artwork, I don’t use pastel or oils - never did develop a liking for either of them. What you see here is representative of what I like to do - watercolor and colored pencil, primarily. Please email me at wingsoflightning@yahoo.com so we can discuss prints and shipping details, and original art if you’re interested.

Hello. I was a decorative artist, mostly animals and scenes with animals. I stopped painting and thought I would never be creative again. For some reason colored pencil came calling and I began to dabble and teach myself. I have found my creative life again and adore it. I search and search for animal drawings and techniques and stubbled on the idea I love fairy art with animals and nature and further searching brought me to fantasy art. I would love to know how to achieve some of the iridescence you put into your work. Its beautiful. Is it mostly shadow and layering? Or is there a product to use to get this iridescence with colored pencil. Thank you for your time and inspiration.

:-) Rachael Mayo replies: "Can’t... fit... full... RESPONSE! GAH! Jane, please email me privately ( wingsoflightning@yahoo.com ) and we can talk shop. Elfwood won’t let me put in the full text of my reply to your queries."

Your gallery is just perfect. First I look around with gleaming eyes, then I get depressed and start thinking about donating my colored pencils to a charity. For me that is not only a sign of great art, it’s what I hope to achieve one day. Too bad my style isn’t right for anything like your work 1

:-) Rachael Mayo replies: "Thanks very much! I assure you, though, that I’ve spent nearly twenty years learning how to use colored pencils this way, and there is still much to learn. Don’t give up, and try not to worry too much about developing style. That comes in all by itself with practice. I wasn’t even aware that I had a style until someone else pointed it out to me. I mean, just color stuff! And so do you. Keep on, keep on."

I felt that I had to write you a comment, but the problem is that all my words just ceased to exist.
Your gallery is astounding.
